On Wednesday the Union ministry of health and family welfare announced, a double mutation found within the Sars-CoV-2 virus that causes coronavirus disease (Covid-19) in Maharashtra is of concern as these mutations haven’t been yet cataloged.
The health ministry released a press release “The research of strain samples from Maharashtra has found that compared to December 2020, there has been a rise within the fraction of samples with the L452R and E484Q mutations. These mutations are found in about 15-20% of samples”
Since the INSACOG (Indian SARS-CoV-2 Consortium on Genomics) initiated its work, 771 variants of concerns are detected in an exceedingly total of 10,787 positive samples shared by States and UTs.
These 736 samples found positive for viruses of the united kingdom (B.1.1.7) lineage, 34 samples were found positive for viruses of the South African (B.1.351) lineage, and 1 sample was found positive for viruses of the Brazilian (P.1) lineage.
Genome sequencing and analysis are dole out on samples from arriving international travellers, contacts of these positive for VOC and community samples from most of the states at INSACOG partner laboratories.
In December 2020, the ministry of health established INSACOG which’s a gaggle of 10 national laboratories meant to perform genome sequencing of positive samples. The samples with these VOCs are identified in 18 states of the country.
According to the health ministry, from Kerala 2,032 samples (from all 14 districts) are founded and from 11 districts the N440K variant that’s related to immune escape has been found in 123 samples.
This variant was earlier found in 33% of samples from the province, and 53 out of 104 samples from Telangana.
Health ministry stated, “Though VOCs and a replacement double mutant variant are found in India, these haven’t been detected in numbers sufficient to either establish a right away relationship or explain the fast increase in cases from some states”. Coronavirus
