On Thursday, a special court extended the NIA (National Investigation Agency) custody of police officer Sachin Waze till April 3. He was arrested for his alleged involvement in the Mukesh Ambani bomb scare case. Explosives case
During the probe, 62 unaccounted bullets were recovered from Waze’s residence. Apart from these, of the 30 bullets allotted to him as a police official, 25 have been found whereas the remaining 5 remain untraceable, claimed NIA. Additional Solicitor General Anil Singh told the court that everybody was shocked to find that a policeman was involved in the crime.
Defending the allegations made against him, Waze told the court that he was being made a scapegoat, adding that he was the investigating officer (IO) for one-and-a-half days and did whatever he could. “Not just me, but all officials of the crime branch did their best. Suddenly changes happened. On March 13, I went to the NIA on my own and I was arrested.”
Mansukh Hiran, a Thane businessman who was murdered, had claimed that the SUV found near Ambani’s house had been stolen from his possession. These were connected cases, and Singh said that the NIA got custody of two other accused arrested in that case from the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad(ATS) on the previous day. The ATS probe reportedly found that the plot to kill Hiran was hatched on March 2 during a two-hour meeting that Waze held with two of his colleagues at the police headquarters.
The NIA invoked the stringent provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) against Waze and sought his custody for another 15 days. Waze urged the court to not extend the police custody and said he wished to make a few written submissions. Explosives case
